Desmond Chona is a kind-hearted, resilient young man who has spent his entire life battling Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). Despite the constant pain and health challenges, he has always fought with courage and hope. But now, at 33 years old, his battle has become even more critical. Desmond is facing kidney failure, a devastating complication caused by years of living with SCD.
Yet, as Desmond's family, we are determined to beat the odds with your help.
What Desmond Is Facing?
Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder that causes red blood cells to take on a sickle or crescent shape. For Desmond, this has meant countless hospital visits and ongoing struggles just to stay alive.
In 2022, he was diagnosed with stage 5 chronic kidney disease (CKD) the final stage of kidney failure. Without a transplant or lifelong dialysis, the outlook is grim. Since mid-2022, dialysis has been keeping Desmond alive, but it's only a temporary solution. He urgently needs both a bone marrow transplant to cure SCD and a kidney transplant to restore his kidney function.
A Long Journey Full of Challenges
Desmond's health struggles have been relentless. In 2020, he lost vision in one eye due to complications from SCD. Then in early 2021, he began experiencing severe fatigue and swelling, leading to the diagnosis of stage 4 kidney disease. Despite doing everything he could to slow the disease's progression, his condition worsened, and by mid-2022, he needed immediate dialysis to survive.
This has taken a heavy toll on Desmond's life. Once the breadwinner for his family, he can no longer work.
After countless setbacks, his family has identified a hospital in India with the expertise to perform the two critical surgeries he needs. They've provided a subsidized quotation for his treatment, and now we need your help to get him there.
How Your Support Will Help?
Desmond will need to stay in India for approximately 5-6 months. The first two months will be spent in the hospital, followed by several months of recovery under close medical supervision.
